THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SAFETY MESSAGE
Keith had a big heart for people in agriculture. News of farm, and especially of silage accidents pained him greatly and drove his passion to "Send Everyone Home Safe."
Dr. Bolsen was a meticulous scientist, professor, and mentor. The Foundation's safety message is based on his life's work in silage pile and bunker engineering, feed quality and quantity, and the positive outcomes resulting in making and managing silage correctly. The two videos below feature Dr. Bolsen himself and provide an excellent background in silage safety. A selection of his papers focusing on silage safety follows. |

– Learning Lounge Presentation at the PDPW Business Conference, March 14, 2019. The title of Keith’s 31-minute presentation was “Prevent Silage Hazards and Fatalities”. Keith reminded the audience that dairies work with silage 365 days a year, and he talked about how to avoid common hazards of managing silage in bunker silos and drive-over piles. Keith said silage safety should be a top priority on your dairy and used detailed accounts of accidents to send the message home.
